Performer Statement

I strive to create performances, characters, and stories that are relevant and engaging for modern audiences. My training in and affinity for movement and physical storytelling permeates and drives my work. My process initiates with what is physical about a role, and then uses that expressivity to stimulate and communicate the rich inner life of the character. I believe strongly that image driven performances and expressive use of the body engage audiences on a different and exciting level. Much of my work incorporates the use of objects, masks, mime, and puppetry to explore physical expression, identity, character, and human drives. I find using my hands to physically build a mask or puppet, and then using those objects in rehearsal or performance helps me connect with and develop a fuller character, one that is more physically engaged, expressive, and specific. As an artist, I'm drawn to themes and characters which explore power dynamics, cultural perception, and identity, especially gender identities, with a focus on masculinities. I am drawn to ensemble work with many collaborators working together to develop and devise new plays, or re-imagine old ones.

As a solo artist, my work focuses on devised original work based in personal clown, mask , puppetry, and multimedia. I try to open up my work in a way that it can play to different cultures, languages, and venues on tour.
